Mike's Recording Cave

In 2017 I began to set up a small home recording studio step by step. At that time I was only using Garage Band on a Mac Book, a low budget Focusrite audio interface, a pair of near field monitors, cheap headphones, an SM 57 and an Audio Technica 2050 large diaphragm condenser mic.

I was rehearsing, recording and mixing in the basement of my house. More and more unsatisfied with the poor sound quality in the (almost) rectangular room, I soon decided to improve the sound quality in my beloved music cave as much as possible. Having read a lot of books and articles on sound reflections, flatter echo, frequency response, etc., I started to build various kinds of absorbers and diffusors to get rid of interfering frequences, low end build ups and other annoying sound problems.

In addition, more effective gear to improve my workflow was needed and therefore I decided to purchase a powerful Mac Mini, a new DAW (Presonus Studio One 5) and a brand-new 32 channel mixing console (Presonus 32 Studio Live III) in Dec 2019. In order to be prepared for all kinds of different recording situations I also bought several new microphones, another mic preamp, more headphones, a headphone amplifier, etc.

My ambitions for the future are to record other fellow musicians, e.g. singer-songwriters, duets, rappers, etc. at my studio in 2021.

I am absolutely looking forward to that.
